The AI SMS Receptionist was built to solve a simple problem: tradies lose jobs because they can't answer the phone while they're on a roof or under a house. The system used AI to handle inbound calls and texts automatically — qualifying leads, booking jobs, and sending follow-ups without the tradie needing to touch their phone. It integrated with existing business numbers so customers never knew they were talking to an AI.
This project taught me that AI is most valuable right now when it's automating back-end tasks — admin, follow-ups, data entry, scheduling. Most consumers and business owners aren't ready to hand over their sales-generating activities to AI just yet. The trust isn't there, and the buying behaviour hasn't shifted enough for people to feel comfortable with an AI handling their leads and customer conversations. That said, I believe this will change. As AI becomes more embedded in everyday tools and people get used to interacting with it, front-of-house AI like this will have its moment — just not today.
