The AI SMS Receptionist was built to solve a simple problem: tradies lose jobs because they can't answer the phone while they're on a roof or under a house. The system used AI to handle inbound calls and texts automatically — qualifying leads, booking jobs, and sending follow-ups without the tradie needing to touch their phone. It integrated with existing business numbers so customers never knew they were talking to an AI.
Ran about six months. I struggled to get customers, and when AI voice tools started landing I shut it down. The deeper lesson: AI is better at optimising back-of-house than front-of-house right now — most business owners still want to own the customer experience themselves.
